"¿x? // variantUNKNOWN"
Human identity is not fixed.
Experiences, trauma, and addiction can alter the way the mind understands itself, creating internal shifts that are difficult to measure or fully explain. Much like a “variant of uncertain significance” in genetic research — a change whose consequences are not yet understood — these psychological alterations can leave us questioning which parts of ourselves are authentic and which have been shaped by pain.
variantUNKNOWN explores this uncertainty within the psyche.
The overlapping faces represent multiple internal states that can emerge when the mind is struggling to reconcile conflicting identities — the self shaped by experience, the self attempting to survive it, and the self searching for clarity amidst the chaos. The vibrant, fragmented energy surrounding the figures reflects the constant movement of thought, memory, and emotion as the psyche attempts to reorganize itself.
Created during a period of confronting addiction and the trauma intertwined with it, the work reflects the process of examining one’s internal landscape without yet knowing what will emerge.
Not all transformation begins with understanding.
Sometimes the first step is simply recognizing that something within us has changed — and learning to sit with the unknown.
